I never knew this but in reading though the logitech support knowledge base i discovered that they recommend using a white or lighter surface as its easier for the laser to track and requires less battery power.

So i decided why not i’ll try it because i have been using my computer so much that i seem to have to recharge mine twice a day. My mouse is almost 3 years old so the battery is also on its way out.

So i just wrapped a piece of plain white printer paper around my mouse pad. And its true my mouse over the past week has only needed to be charged every day or two not 2-3x a day. So if you find yourself like me having to recharge so often that you find yourself with a backup mouse pluged in well your main one recharges. Try doing what i did and find a lighter surface or a piece of white paper. Also seems to be more responsive not that it was a issue before.

I don’t know the cause or reason i just know it works for me in about 1/3 of the time or less then it does just copying and with about 900megs less ram usage. Just rar up the files using winrar would probably work with winzip or any compression program. Copy that one file to your destination drive and then uncompress it.

300,000 files totaling 2.3gigs of all different files.

All different elipse projects and websites i work on.

Time to complete:

Winrar:

  • 11mins to compress using store method /w delete files option checked
  • 1min give or take a few seconds to copy to destination drive - at 60MB/sec
  • 8mins to decompress

Vista:

  • 2+ hours - The numbers varyed but it was only copying at 250-300K/sec

Ram Usage:

  • Winrar - 56,244K
  • Vista - 900,000K and growing when i canceled

Now this isn’t a new computer granted in 2003 is was a monster system. It has dual 2.67hz xeon’s these are old p4’s no multi core nothing no sse3 and only 512 cache no 64bit. The system has 4gigs of ram but vista only lets me see 2.9ish.

I have tried it with all different hard drives IDE and SATA always get the same results. Being that for some reason i can compress copy and decompress files faster on the same machine then i can just move/copy them using vista’s explorer. Thats pretty sad if i do say so myself and i don’t understand how it could be. Where the logic is in this granted i’m not using compression just storing the files. But that means i’m copying the files 3x with winrar and its WAY faster then vista’s explorer doing it once and using 850ish Megs of ram less then vista. Can anyone explain this to me?
